The Horizontal Everest Extreme Journeys on Ellesmere Island Jerry Kobalenko 9781926645179 Books Reviews
- One day, looking at the map, I asked myself what is like the Ellesmere island, the second Northern island in the world after Greenland (and the difference is small). Especially the Nansen Sound fascinated me (I didn't realize from Google maps that Axel Heiberg is another island). The little information I found on Internet was even more interesting, the Hazel lake, the Grise Fiord, the Alert base.
So I bought this book, expecting descriptions of Kobalenko travels, to get a taste of Ellesmere landscape. While it has these it has also much more. Information about the fauna, about historical expeditions, about the Inuit and about adventurers and explorers. Once I started to read I couldn't let it from my hand. The only thing missing are the pictures and maybe better maps.
I recommend this book to anybody interested on high arctic regions, it is well written, alert and also a good point to start learning about the expeditions to the North Pole. - This is a fascinating book. The author, a Canadian, a former book editor and athlete, describes his several arduous trips in the Canadian sub-arctic islands with passion and eloquence. His writing is informative and captivates the reader with many historical facts about former arctic explorers. He does not only write about sleds, skis, huskies . . . he adds humor and describes resilience under harsh conditions. As an armchair explorer, I could not stop reading and felt as if I was with him at every step that he took on ice.
- This book is an absolute gem. Extreme hiking is Kobalenko's life's passion and he has spent thousands of hours exploring Ellesmere and surrounding islands. He's a good writer and gives valuable insights into extreme foot travel, the history of Ellesmere exploration, and the exploits of early explorers, both European and Inuit. He has augmented his travels with many hours of study of the actual journals of earlier explorers. The book is a tour de force and a must read for anyone interested in the High Arctic.
- It's been a few years since I've read this, but wow! Amazing
Kobalenko reads a lot up in the tundra, and it shows in his literary style. The book is a pleasure to read.
