The Charlie Chaplin Archives Paul Duncan 9783836538435 Books Reviews

  • I pre-ordered this book and have been waiting for months to have it in my hands. Like the other reviews there is pros and cons about the book.
    Pros
    1. The book binding from front to back is beautifully done (picture doesn't do it justice).
    2. The pages look and feel like matte photo paper.
    3. There are some different photos and letters that are new to me. I do own Steidel's "A Photo Diary", Vance's "Chaplin Genius of the Cinema" and "Charlie Chaplin The Keystone Album" (The Keystone Album shows movie slides of each Keystone Film Charlie was in, which I would recommend for any Chaplin Fan). It may be the same pictures as in many other books but the clarity and gallery photo paper used is exquisite you could frame it as artwork. Obviously with the cost value of $200 you get want you pay for which is quality.
    4. Each book is numbered and has a clipping film from "City Lights".
5.Great book to have on your ottoman or coffee table for guest to read.
    Cons
    1. It's heavy (don't be fooled by the size of the box when you receive in the mail use both hands when picking up the package. I dropped mine by mistake).

I would recommend this book for new and long time fans of Charlie Chaplin. Yes it may be the same material of his life and career but put together in a beautiful book. It would be nice to know new facts about him but he was a private person. Moreover his family and estate have control on how much they would want to release anyway but why would they? His private and professional life is what keeps the public intrigued. The searching is what keeps his legacy alive. Look how other stars of the silent film era have faded but we still know and recognize "The Little Tramp" character by his walk, bowler's hat and cane.
  • This just might be the ultimate Chaplin retrospective ever made. I'm still working my way through it after having bought it 2 months ago. What a treasure. For anyone who likes Chaplin, likes to read about him, his thoughts, photos - some of which are familiar, some which are new - in a beautifully designed book... this is it. Caution It's heavy! Don't read this in bed.
  • The book is large, beautifully designed, and is the same as the other volumes in the "Archives" series. Great photos, beautifully printed, text is okay, these books are a little unwieldy, but I really love all the Archives books. I'm a huge Chaplin fan and yet I didn't even know about this book until I was visiting a Taschen store. Thankfully three years later they still have copies. And thankfully whilst I was there and almost ready to purchase at full price of $299, I just happened to check on my phone and was delighted it was less than half that cost. So I came home, made the purchase and two days later it arrived.

I read the "reviews" here most of which are very complimentary but a few of which feel it necessary to complain about photos being in other Chaplin books (who cares) and this and that. Just ignore that stuff - if you're a Chaplin fan, this book at this price is just too good to pass up so don't.
  • This book is wonderful! It is, however, not a "lap" book. It is rather large and weighs approx. 15 lbs. The book binding is top quality. The many photos in the book are very clear and sharp. While many of the photos have been published in other Chaplin books, there are many included that appear no where else. Many are out-takes. There are in-depth descriptions for all his films - from Keystone all the way to his last movie in 1967 (with Sophia Loren). I own many books about Chaplin and I probably own all of his movies, but this book was a welcome addition to my collection. I highly recommend it to any Chaplin fan.
  • A massive exploration done just the way it should. I love how all of the images have been meticulously scanned in highest resolution and cleaned to perfection in this presentation. Every image is immaculate and some presented impressively large. You couldn't ask for more. This is an incredible collector's item....THE Chaplin piece to own.
  • I can't add anything else to this amazing book that hasn't already been said more eloquently in the glowing reviews you'll find here. For the casual observer of Chaplin up to the guys like me who really enjoy Chaplin but aren't scholars of his work and already know every little detail, you will enjoy this book.

The quality of the book is amazing. I keep it on my coffee table as it has been a huge hit with guests that come over to visit. It is heavy though, so don't drop it on your foot!
  • I think this book is stunning. The coverage of his earliest years is more detailed than anything I have ever seen. I am lingering over the pages, and finding riches in every one. Congratulations for a fabulous job.
  • An extraordinary document of Charlie Chaplin and his films. The presentation is stunning. The pages thick and high quality. The amount of information presented is handsomely organized over the course of his amazing career.
