Are you the Fallback Girl?

If you've ever found yourself in a relationship that feels and seemingly looks like one but you're struggling with commitment or you've been in the ambiguous territory of a 'casual relationship', you've likely tried to change them, wondered what you 'did' to cause this, what you can do to win their love and commitment, or even whether you're going crazy. Mr Unavailable and the Fallback Girl is the definitive guide to understanding the relationship between emotionally unavailable men and the women that love them. From explaining how and why they blow hot and cold, to where that future they promised went to, how you've ended up being a booty call, why you've been together for a gazillion years but aren't going anywhere, and more importantly how and why you're involved with them in the first place, all of the answers are here. You know you're dealing with unavailability when you ask stuff like

  • What happened to that 'great guy' from the beginning?
  • Why won't he break up or stay away if he doesn't want to commit?
  • What the hell did I do to make him disappear?
  • Is he going to leave 'her' for me?
  • It's because he's shy/busy/scared of his feelings isn't it?
  • Inspired by the real life adventures in unavailability of Natalie Lue and the readers of her site BaggageReclaim.com, Mr Unavailable and the Fallback Girl is an empowering, entertaining and inspiring read that will wise you up to pitfalls such as men who aren't over their exes, Future Fakers, guys that have more baggage than a Heathrow terminal and reappearing childhood 'sweethearts'. If you want to understand your own availability, and why commitment in a healthy relationship is eluding you, Mr Unavailable and the Fallback Girl is your guide to being available and attracted to healthy, available partners. Note - the book is in British English not US English.

"Probably the best book I have read about dealing with emotionally unavailable men. No only does the author identify the types of men that fall into this category; she also more importantly, identifies the patterns and logic behind why women fall for these types of men. Very insightful. I highly recommend it"

    • Can't emphasize enough how much of an impact this book had on me. I found myself in a relationship with Mr. Unavailable last year, and I struggled for a while trying to cope with the realization that it wasn't going to work out... I kept telling myself he'd get his act together, he'd get serious eventually, but I was living in denial and ignoring what my better judgement was telling me. I was also miserable.

This book helped me to realize that I needed to get out of the relationship, that it WASN'T going to fix itself, I couldn't have a relationship with no progression, and on his terms only... It was just the kick in the pants that I needed and I stopped the casual romance with him two days after finishing it. Now, I tell everyone I meet about this book now. Thank you!
    • Natalie Lue, I love you! Thank you so much for writing a book that has helped me so much in dealing with a Emotionally Unavailable man that I had the misfortune to date for several months. At the end of this relationship, which was two weeks ago, I was upset, confused, and angry about the puzzling actions of my Mr. Unavailable, who seemed quite a "catch" for the first couple of months we dated. But I notice strange things about the way he acted in our relationship and simply could not figure out why he was like that. He was both very attached to me at times and fairly cold and unreachable at others. It was a rollercoaster ride that was not fun and by the time I ended it, I was very depressed. I found your website and then your book(s) and have now started to feel better about what happened. Thank you, Natalie, you always get to the heart of the matter and I enjoy your down to earth and sometimes humorous way of looking at things. I am a fan!
    • Overall I found this book quite helpful while going through yet another break up with yet another emotionally unavailable man. It was eye-opening and comforting to realize that I’m not the only one who seems to be repeating the same patterns over and over again. I appreciated the journal exercises (especially writing out boundaries), though I thought the values section did not seem to have as clear instructions as the others. Also, the book made a number of references to things that supposedly could be found on the baggage reclaim website, that I either couldn’t find or required me paying for something else. That was kind of frustrating.

While I wasn’t expecting this book to reference scientific studies, I think readers could benefit from exploring adult attachment theories as a more grounded explanation for why Mr. Unavailables and Fallback Girls act the way they do. The author of this book kind of floundered back and forth on whether Mr. Unavailables are simply jerks, or if we’re two sides of the same coin and both products of our life experiences. Since finishing this book, I’ve started reading Attached by Amir Levine and Rachel Heller. I’m finding their description of avoidant attachment personality perfectly fits Mr. Unavailables, and anxious attachment fits Fallback Girls. Mr. Unavailable & the Fallback Girl definitely served a purpose in my depressed and angry post-break-up state, and helped me realize there are behaviors I need to recognize and firmly not accept. I would recommend it, but also suggest looking into attachment theories to provide a more consistent and grounded explanation.
    • I am glad to find this book. As a person who is constantly working on personal growth and trying to find problems within i was feeling guilty for all my failures in relationships. The last relationship ended a month ago before I found this book. I had mixture of feelings poisonous guilt and questioning my adequacy. As a typical " nice girl " i ended relationship when my mr. unavailable didn't visit me in a hospital, even after that i was feeling that i must have done something wrong to " provoke " him. This book was a remedy and eye opener. Thank you Natalie...
    • A friend bought this book for me and we started reading it together. All I can say is that the amount of "Holy crap" moments that I have had while reading it have been mind-blowing. I had revelations that I don't think I would have ever had because of this book. It has not only made me reframe my past relationships; it has made me reassess ALL of my relationships- even my business relationships.
    • Probably the best book I have read about dealing with emotionally unavailable men. No only does the author identify the types of men that fall into this category; she also more importantly, identifies the patterns and logic behind why women fall for these types of men. • I recently decided to purchase this book although I have read Natalie’s blog for years! I have been working on myself this past year since I broke up with a man in a LTR. It’s a good wake up call for myself to have better boundaries and express them to men I date. I grew up in a strict household of having certain values and yet it was a very toxic environment. Verbally, mentally, physically Abusive parents and an alcoholic father. I saw the patterns in all my relationships with picking Unavailable men similar to my father. I avoided marriage my whole life. This book is a must have to really wake up and start to work on yourself. My picker is broken. I have been fixing that!! I have gone out on many many dates and can see all the red and amber flags!!!! I am in a much better place today and am very happy with my life. I want (not need) a man to share my life with.
